The shields and the rodelas are the oldest defensive weapons serving warriors to protect themselves from attack by other offensive weapons. They are placed in one of the arms, leaving free the other arm to retaliate. The shield and the Buckler have been used by almost all human cultures for the defense in the fight, both the distance as melee.
Through the centuries and across regions is it has adapted tactically to ensure maximum protection of combatants. Originally manufactured in leather, then in metal either copper, iron or bronze, and later in wood. There are squares, round, in rectangular or heraldic form.
They were beautifully decorated with reliefs and luxurious inlays for tournaments of gala. In Western culture served as support for identifying elements of the individual who was carrying, the composition of the coat of arms with their coats, giving rise to the art of heraldry.
The Scutum was the shield of the Roman Empire used by legionaries. It was a great size and was an excellent defence for the Roman legionaries, without that its weight came to be a burden or a hindrance for whom bore it.
