The manufacturing process of a sheet of steel to the carbon of a katana Hanwei can be summarized in 6 fundamental steps. Following the forging process, the manufacture of the Saya, Sageo handle and assemble all the pieces that are part of the katana. The following describes the manufacturing process of carbon steel blade:
1.- Forging of the blade.- Once heated in the forge repeated hammering steel provides a uniform dispersion of carbon throughout the steel for uniform strength of the sheet finishing. |
2.- Polished blade.- Is filed and polished steel sheet carbon. At this stage, steel is still in the annealed (soft) the state and the blade is straight. |
3.- Coverage of clay.- Special clay is applied on the blade of the sword. In this way we cool more rapidly during the tempering process. |
4.- Temperate enfriamiento.- It is one of the critical parts of the process. The clay coated sheet is heated to a certain temperature and then chill it in a water bath. Mastery of this step of the process depends on the curvature and straightness of the road. |
5.- Adjustment and Calibration.- Adjust the center of gravity of the sword. We polish the blade and install the habaki. |
6.- Finishing and retouching.- Final polishing and finishing of the piece on different surfaces. |
In the picture below you can see the difference of the katana blade in the 6 processes described above:

Below we explain how we proceed to the manufacture of saya, Mango, sageo and assembling parts:
Uppers.- It is carved in natural varnished wood dospiezas to make them match the length, width, thickness and curvature of the blade of the katana. Finally, polishes and shines. |
Grip (Tsuka).- It consists of two carved wood pieces that fit securely to the blade tang. Carved carcasses. The tsuka is wrapped with high quality cotton. The Kashira Menuki incorporated during this process. |
Sageo (cord).- Cotton fabrics are used high quality to match those of the Tsuka. In some cases, continue to weave by hand. A process that takes time and experience. |
Assembly.- Final assembly of all parts with special attention to the holding of the tsuka with the shank which uses two bamboo spikes between handle and tang. |
