Espada medieval del siglo XIV
Medieval sword, 14th. Century
New sword designs were developed at a pace faster and faster between 1300 and 1500, during the Renaissance. The main change was the lengthening of the grip, allowing for the use ambidextrous, and a longer blade. This type of sword, called in his time Langes Schwert (German longsword) or Spadone, it was common around 1400.
Another variant was the specialized sword pierce armor, sword type. The long sword was popularized by the ability of range, cut and thrust, while the sword did their ability to meet the gaps between plates of armor. The grip was sometimes wrapped with wire or animal skin to provide extra support, while difficult to disarm the possibility of hitting hand. In the XVI century, long Doppelhänder (now called Zweihänder (Germanic both terms mean the use of both hands) ended the trend towards increasing the size of swords (especially the decline of plate armor and the advent of firearms), and early Modern Age saw the return to lighter weapons to one hand.
