2 guns mourning English, eighteenth century. A duel is a formal type of combat, as has been practiced since the fifteenth to the twentieth century in Western societies.

Can be defined as a consensual fight between two gentlemen, who use deadly weapons in accordance with explicit or implicit rules that are respected by the honor of the contestants, accompanied by sponsors, who may themselves fighting each other or not. In general, and especially in recent decades, a duel is considered an illegal act in most countries.

The duel will be developed by a party-challenger-to wash an insult to their honor. The overall objective was not to kill the opponent, but to achieve "satisfaction", for example restoring honor to bring into play their own life to defend it.

Should be distinguished dueling combat test since the former are not used to determine guilt or innocence, nor are formal procedures. The duels were instead generally illegal, although in most societies where it was usual, was social acceptance.

Participants in a duel properly raised were generally not persecuted, and in cases where they were, they were not jailed for that reason. It was felt that only men had an honor to defend, and therefore the high social class was the one qualified to do this: if a gentleman was insulted by someone from the lower class, that is not challenged to a duel, but it inflicted some physical punishment or commissions to his servants to do so.
